フライドポテト in English is not “Fried Potato.” So many learners of English make that mistake. But who can blame them; it makes sense. A potato that has been fried should be called a fried potato. Actually, they are called, “French fries” or “fries” for short in the US and Canada. In the UK they are called “chips.”
Even though many people associate French fries with American food, French fries actually come from Belgium. They are now eaten through-out the world.
One big difference between countries when it comes to French fries is the condiments used for dipping. In the Netherlands, sometimes even in Japan, mayonnaise is used for dipping. In Canada, Poutine is a popular topping. In the UK, malt vinegar is the dip of choice. Recently in Japan flavoring packets are becoming popular with many interesting flavors. However, the most famous condiment of all, loved my many Americans, is ketchup.
