In Japanese you say, “Hanabi” which translates directly to “Flower of Fire” or “Fire Flower.” So many people think that is how it is said in English. Sadly, translating is not always as easy as doing it word for word. The real answer is “Fireworks.”
Fireworks are a 4th of July tradition in America and normally only set-off on that day. However, in Japan, it seems like all of Summer equals fireworks season.
The biggest trouble with setting off fireworks in Japan, is finding a place to do it where you won’t get in trouble. Many people will go to the riverside, but that is far and not possible for everyone.
Luckily, one of our family’s friends recommended a park near our house where it is permitted to use handheld fireworks. To my surprise, when I checked the rules board at the park, it actually said OK to using fireworks.
So with a few friends, my daughter and my son (in the picture) had a blast safely playing with fireworks.
We even found some grasshoppers and frogs to make the night even more interesting.
